Let’s dive into what hsbDesign has to offer.

What exactly is hsbDesign?

For those looking to boost designer efficiency in offsite timber construction, hsbDesign is hsbcad’s industry-leading solution for framing and detailing. It is not a standalone software, but rather a robust, integrated platform that works directly within your existing professional design tools: Autodesk Revit® and Autodesk AutoCAD® Architecture.

hsbDesign allows you to take a design model and automatically generate detailed, production-ready framing elements for walls, floors, and roofs. This process includes everything needed for manufacturing, from generating precise geometry and material lists to creating shop drawings and clean CNC machine outputs.

hsbDesign takes you beyond standard BIM workflows into intelligent, offsite and timber-specific design logic. Here’s what that means:

1.  Seamless Integration: Everything happens within the established Revit® or AutoCAD® environment. No extra apps, no errors, and faster onboarding.

2.  Automation: Repetitive tasks are automated through predefined rules and styles.

3. Accuracy: Detailed models are connected directly to manufacturing processes (through tools like hsbView and hsbMake), ensuring that communication flows consistently and accurately from the initial design phase to the factory floor.

With hsbDesign 29, we have amplified this core mission, focusing on making the connection between design and manufacturing smoother, faster, and more controlled than ever before.

New Features in hsbDesign 29 for Revit®

hsbDesign 29 for Revit® is built to handle the complexities of modern timber construction, ensuring that even the most elaborate designs can be prepared for production with speed and precision. Fully compatible with Revit® 2026, this release focuses heavily on smarter imports, enhanced framing control, and greater automation. Our goal with this version was to provide smoother cross-platform interoperability, quicker shop drawings, faster framing, cleaner CNC outputs, and highly consistent production data.

Enhanced Interoperability: IFC Importer & ModelX Importer

IFC Import on hsbDesign for Revit®

Cross-platform collaboration, which is often a bottleneck in large projects, has been significantly streamlined. The enhanced IFC Importer now seamlessly maps IFC elements directly into native Revit elements, critically enriching them with hsbcad data. This includes support for complex items like engineered trusses, walls, floors, roofs, and mass elements, ensuring smooth data exchange and better collaboration with external partners.

ModelX Import on hsbDesign for Revit®

Similarly, the ModelX Importer has been upgraded. This importer, which mirrors the IFC import capabilities, introduces a new interface for validations and extensions. Two new extensions are particularly noteworthy, allowing users to map ModelX entities into Revit families and import ModelX properties directly as Revit parameters. This results in smoother integration, increased design flexibility, and a faster model transfer from hsbDesign for AutoCAD and other IFC exports, resulting in fewer errors.

Precision Detailing: Three-wall Connection

Dealing with complex wall junctions often requires manual adjustments, but the new Three-wall Connection feature makes handling these intricate intersections effortless. This innovative feature allows users to create custom details specifically designed to resolve intersections between three walls. By defining these details, complex wall connections can be modeled with precision, ensuring both design accuracy and constructability without hours of laborious manual detailing.

Upgraded Framing Styles Editor

The Framing Styles Editor has been upgraded to enhance configuration speed and minimize setup errors. Users can now define default inventory items and codes, assign aliases per framing group, and set default material values, all while retaining the flexibility to apply overrides per group.

Automatic Assemblies

Automatic Assemblies on hsbDesign for Revit®

Automatically generate assemblies from Revit elements that share the same hsbcad module definition. Modules can be assigned or created using the Module Extension, providing a structured and consistent approach to project organization. This intelligent automation not only improves model clarity but also accelerates production output, ensuring that fabrication-ready assemblies are generated faster and more reliably.

Comments Tool

The Comments Tool ensures project communication and production notes remain perfectly aligned. Users can now export Revit text, regions, and hidden comments straight to hsbcad shop drawings, hsbView, or hsbMake. This keeps everyone aligned, from designers to factory operators, throughout every stage of the project.

Expanded Dynamo Nodes

New Features in hsbDesign 29 for AutoCAD®

hsbDesign 29 for AutoCAD® brings the same commitment to cutting repetitive tasks and enhancing precision to the familiar AutoCAD® environment. Fully supporting AutoCAD® 2026, this release includes fundamental changes that boost design flexibility and operational consistency.

New Wall Framing Engine on AutoCAD®: Framing Styles Editor

Framing Styles Editor on hsbDesign for AutoCAD®

The biggest highlight for AutoCAD® users is the introduction of the powerful new Wall Framing Engine, the “Framing Styles Editor”, now fully integrated into AutoCAD Architecture. If you are familiar with it on Revit®, you can now bring that powerful framing control to your wall framing projects within AutoCAD. This integration gives users a more intuitive interface to define, manage, and reuse framing logic and detail components.

Furthermore, work is already underway to extend this unified framing engine to include roofs and floors, promising a single, consistent framing solution for your entire model soon.

Persist Technology

Design flexibility receives a major improvement with the arrival of Persist Technology in AutoCAD®. This new capability means that any edits you make, whether copying, moving, editing, or deleting individual beams or sheets within a wall element, will remain intact, even after the wall is regenerated. This update reduces repetitive manual work and rework, saving design time.

Three-Wall Connection
